Diary Entry
Helena Falls / Dolphins
As I put my feet in the shallow cold salty sea water, thoughts came rushing through my mind, let me out of here. I wondered if Nadine was thinking the same thoughts.
We walked in a lot of water and my boots were soaking wet right through to my bare feet. When we got to the bush, Lance told us to take our bright red lifejackets and put them in the bush. Then we walked and walked for what seemed like hours, but in fact was only 10-20 minutes. When we arrived at the waterfall I was stunned because it was so amazing, but we had to keep moving. I looked ahead at what we had to walk up, up some very slippery rocks. But I thought about what I would achieve by going up close to the waterfall, as I carried on walking and walking, watching where I stepped so I didn’t fall off onto the ground below. I concentrated so hard that when we reached the top I hadn’t even noticed and thought we were still going to the waterfall.
As soon as I realised that we were at the waterfall I was speechless and sooo amazed, we played around and looked at the amazing waterfall. It was so high and the water so powerful.
Lance was walking happily up behind the waterfall and we kept asking if we could go too, but Lance replied “NO! you can’t because Mr Morland or Mr Silcock aren’t with you.”
So we started walking back down the very slippery rocks. They were wet and covered in slippery green moss. We got back to the bush and picked up our bright red life jackets and headed back to the boat. When we reached the boat our feet and boots were soaking wet again so I hopped into the boat and took my seat!
We were cruising in our dingy called the “Deep Cove Dolphin” when Mr Jenkins suddenly yelled “Hey you guys look over there.” We all turned to the direction Mr Jenkins was pointing to where the sound separated to the sea. We looked and spotted some little blackish brown fins pointing up from the water. “Ah Shark” yelled one of the boys. “No, No, No” yelled Mrs Ayto and Mr Jenkins “They are dolphins.” “Oh” we all replied. Mrs Ayto tried to radio Lance and he told us to turn the engine on low, so they are not frightened so we did.
We went around in circles heading towards the shore, but at the same time watching for the colony of dolphins. When we reached the shore I yelled out to Becky and Amy “Did you see them!!!” They replied “Yeah, you were sooo lucky.” We then walked along the road to the hostel. And that concludes my highlights of Camp Deep Cove March 8-11 2007.
